In addition, the instructional writing was poor in this book. I found myself reading some passages several times to determine what I was actually supposed to do. I suppose, this could partially be blamed on my lack of familiarity with the program, but if the book is marketed for beginning users, the language the authors use to describe a task should be clear and easy to follow. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of this particular title in the Classroom in a Book series, and I seriously question whether I’ll look to this series when I get ready to pursue Flash training.

I have basic competency using the available tools in the program. However, the level of instruction the book provided hasn’t given me confidence that there will be lasting knowledge transfer to design tasks on the job.

Being brand new to Illustrator, I felt that I needed to get this book to show me how to thoroughly use the program. I had already done a bunch of tutorials I found on the internet, but wanted to really be able to dig deep into Illustrator, so I turned to the Adobe book for this.

The problem I found was that it did a great job of detailing everything that I already knew how to do, but halfway through the book started flying through the things I didn’t.

Also, I felt its biggest downfall was when it started just saying “click this”, “choose this”, “enter this”, etc. Anyone can follow a click here, enter this, tutorial and come out with the results, but understanding the “why” behind it is truly learning and being able to apply the lesson later on. Overall it was decent because I at least got to know the layout of the program well, but you’re probably better off just finding tutorials on the internet for each specific purpose if you can.

I know this is a pretty old book for old adobe software but. I was looking to get back into graphic design without breaking the bank. I lucked out and picked cs3 standard for 20 on a certain auction site.

It has been a while since I used illustrator but this book got me up and running hopefully one day I will have enough money to afford the cloud adobe cs but until then this will do.

I recommend classroom in a book it is clear albeit a little disorganized as you do an assignment then learn the work space which I think is backwards. But it is a good book for old software.

Great way to get into the computer graphics and illustration is either older software the cheaper but just as core suite but not as recognized in the industry or last inkscape n gimp.

Martin Even bad code can function. Adobe Illustrator CS3 is just right for me. I make cards and love to make drawings for my digi stamps. I go thru the book and learn the steps one by one, then I go through it again and learn the why’s. This is all at my own pace. Your learn a step and use it. Learn and do This is a great book form me.

I will be buying more for other software products. This is for Adobe CS3, the older programming which still has a useful link function the more modern CS programs don’t have. The value for me with this book is that it provides more detailed information about the specific CS3 function, and it is possibly of use with other CS programs that are updates of the CS3. It allows a user to work with their program and learn more with the book. The trouble with this book is it’s only for one aspect of the CS3 which means other information is needed for learning and using the programs better, there are the other Adobe CS manuals also.

The value for users is better with self teaching than just using the programs freehand. While that’s still an option, often the details and alternatives which are shared in the manuals can assist in progressing uses faster.

Book arrived quickly and in great condition. Since my first experience with the Classroom in a Book series had been so positive, I picked up their Illustrator book. When I started the Photoshop book, I already had some self-taught knowledge of the program.

When I started the Illustrator book, I had never used the program, other than to complete a couple of lessons in the previous book that integrated Photoshop and Illustrator files.

And, I’ll admit that my skills in drawing with a mouse are poor at best. However, I hoped to walk away from the Illustrator book with a higher level of comfort with the tool and be able to utilize it for some of my design tasks.

Verified Purchase. I’ve always had a hard time with color and I love the new color wheel with all the coordinating color options.

There appears to be more samples on the DVD which I appreciate, because although authors suggest using your own work, it is always nice to have an actual file to work with. That’s it in a nutshell.

If you have the CS2 version and don’t plan to upgrade to CS3 don’t bother getting this book, keep your old version with the tiger on the cover. If you got CS3 this book will help you learn the new features. All those who have the WOW books, it continues to be a great learning tool. It is geared toward the more advanced Illustrator user. If you are just learning I suggest getting the beginner books and dip into this one as you get more skilled.

The section on the Zen of the Pen hasn’t changed and remains, to me, the best way to learn the pen tool. If you are willing to patiently go through the Pen excercies both in the book and on the DVD you will be a Master of the Pen and the rest of Illustrator is a piece of cake. I spend entirely too much money on Adobe training, peripherals and other reading materials. This, however, was a great purchase. I have been using Adobe Illustrator since 3. There are always new things to learn about these fantastic programs, but with the apps that are Not Photoshop, decent advanced books can be difficult to come by.

While this is not a book that I would recommend to somebody who has never used Illustrator before, neither is it one that is above the average user’s head. There are plenty of exercises that cover Illustrator basics, including a “Zen of Illustrator” chapter that presents several methods of creating a single simple shape for the purpose of learning to Think Illustrator.

After that are plenty of step-by-step tutorials for how to create nifty effects that most people don’t even associate with Illustrator. Even if you never worked through these exercises, the examples alone would make the book worthwhile If you already know how to work in Illustrator and want to move beyond the basics, however, this book is definitely worth the price. I’ve used several successive editions of this book to bring me up to speed on the iterations of Adobe Illustrator.

The “CS3” edition continues the tradition, and I was able to find explanations and examples for most of the items that interested me. This edition seems to be a little less lavishly illustrated and certainly doesn’t approach the visual delight that the “CS” edition was. That may just reflect the increasing complexity of the software, with a need for more written explanation, or a tighter budget. Still this is a helpful book and I will probably buy the next version as well.

The WOW series for Illustator has been a terrific series. The books are in color, well illustrated and clearly explained even if you’re new to the program. I think it’s one of the best and quickest ways to get a grasp of the depth of things you can do with Illustrator and become fairly proficient in a short period of time.

My only caveat is if you already own WOW for CS2 you may want to think twice about dropping coin on the CS3 version as there is quite a bit of material repeated here. However, compared to a lot of other books out there that are dry, in black and white and more expensive, you could do a lot worse than owning both versions.

I liked how this book was in full color and was easy enough that anyone can pick it up and learn. I also liked that it appealed for the more advanced users at the end with tutorials on integrating Illustrator with Flash, After Effects, etc. It pretty much covers everything and the CD is loaded with goodies and plug-ins that are really awesome as well. I like the WOW! I was very disappointed in this book.

The cost of the book, even used, does not justify the content; sparse on instructions for a highly complicated program. Illustrator requires detailed instructions because it is not necessarily user intuitive nor friendly. Even some of Illustrator’s advanced features like Live Trace and mesh blends; not enough instructions provided. Important areas such as Pathfinder and custom brush, I felt was glossed over.

The help files on the accompanying CD is no better. Tutorials on the bezier pen tool is marginal at best. You’ll find much better tutorials on Adobe’s website. Its a good book for getting inspiration with the full color gallery section but don’t expect much on clear detailed instructions.

Book WOW! Great Book! If you want to learn Illustrator, it’s concise, applicable and easy to understand.
