While I was messing around, suddenly iTunes recognized the iPod in recovery mode and wanted to restore. I do not know what I did in what order to make this happen but I was doing different things with the buttons and the USB connection. Anyway, I clicked on restore and the process went on for several minutes and stopped before completion.

It identified a error. Based on this, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled. I cannot duplicate the action to get back to restore.
